history

First years 1936–1945

The Mainz Police Sports Club was founded in the air raid shelter of the Mainz Police Department on November 5, 1936. Since there were already a number of sports clubs at that time, the sports authority in Mainz was negative about the project. The police officer, Hermann Lohrum (born 1892), was adamant along with other colleagues and brought together 192 interested parties on his advertising list. The authority now had to approve the application. Hermann Lohrum became 1st chairman; Together with Messrs. Nikolai, Anstatt, Wehrum, Diefenbach, Sickinger, Kunz and Reubold they formed the board. The police officers Bieger, Bock, Dresen Kohmann, Ries and Stadler worked on the sports committee. The biggest problem, despite the 319 members in early 1937, was that there were no "young" police officers who joined the association. Only four officials under the age of 30 were members.

PSV took part in the Waldecker Sports Festival as early as 1937 and made it into the ranks with 14 athletes. The PSV was also successfully represented at the 1938 physical exercise festival in Mainz . In the spring of 1938 the association had 350 members and the financial situation was favorable, so that the cashier, Alois Wehrum, was able to give the green light to the construction of a swimming pool. On August 7, 1938, the swimming facility on the Ingelheimer Aue was inaugurated; the construction costs amounted to around 3,000 Reichsmarks (comparable to 150,000 euros).

In addition to the classic sports of athletics at the time , there was also the fistball department under the direction of H. Graf, who also built up the handball department. A shooting division and a group of swimmers who did not take part in competitions. A boat shed had been created for the canoe department.

The Mainzer Anzeiger wrote about the annual general meeting in 1939: "New leadership in the police sports club under the direction of Captain Schroeder. He started in 1928 as a successful athlete at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam." With the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939, sports activities were reduced to a few events. At the end of 1940 there was still a fox hunt on bicycles and a shooting competition by the rifle division; the fistball players rose to the highest area class. On November 8, 1941, the five-year existence of the association was celebrated. In 1942 the track and field athletes were still successful and the fistball players played in the top class. In 1943 the club had to change its name and was called Sportgemeinschaft der Ordnungspolizei (SpGO) . Sports activities are still recorded this year.

Dissolution and re-establishment 1945–1957

After the war ended in 1945, the association broke up because people had other concerns. The French occupying forces did not give the police sports club, which was viewed as a "military hotbed", permission to re-establish. On May 19, 1949, the Ministry of the Interior of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate ordered service sport for police officers. Thereupon the former chairman Hermann Lohrum contacted the state sports committee Rheinhessen in order to get permission to found a club. This took place on May 3, 1950 as the police sports club Grünweiß Mainz .

Hermann Lohrum became 1st chairman again, his deputy was Willi Geiberger. Other board members were: Max Müller, Paul Mönch, Georg Löffler and Werner Fuchs. The departments fistball, handball, music, athletics and soccer were set up.

The general meeting called on May 10, 1952 changed the board. Hermann Lohrum was retired as police chief and was no longer available for re-election. Willi Geiberger became first chairman, second chairman: Peter Schneider, managing director: Max Müller, cashier: Paul Mönch, material administrator: Georg Löffler, advisory board members: Hans Hein and Karl Arzt. Youth leaders were: Albert Hück, Karl Eby and Philipp Hofem. On June 28, 1952, the occupying forces opened the swimming pool again. The following departments were active: fistball , basketball , table tennis , shooters , athletics, especially the youth group. The chief police inspector Hanns Severin, who was transferred to Mainz in 1955, became chairman. The accommodation of the riot police in the Mainzer Templerstraße opened up new perspectives for the PSV. A handball and judo department is established. The athletics department also had a visible boost.

1958-2001

On April 17, 1958, a new board was elected. The president of the association was the police president Portz, 1st chairman. Hanns Severin, 2nd chairman: Herbert Schönig, managing director. Max Müller, cashier: Paul Mönch, assessors are: Willi Geiberger, Peter Lenz, Peter Schneider, Georg Löffler, Karl Krohmann. Chief sportsman becomes Police Councilor Küger. Soon afterwards an additional motorsport department was founded. At the annual general meeting in 1961, in the 25th anniversary year, the club finally got its last name change to Polizei-Sportverein Mainz eV

Eight departments were active at this time: basketball , fistball , handball , judo , athletics , motor sports , shooting and table tennis . The successes in this anniversary year are impressive:

In October 1976 the PSV celebrated its 40th anniversary. The 1st chairman at this time was Helmut Röhrich. In the anniversary year 1976, the PSV had eight departments with 739 members:

In 1986 the police sports club Mainz e. V. 50 years old, in 2001 it celebrated its 65th anniversary. In September 2011 the PSV celebrated its 75th anniversary.
