Pollhansmarkt
Pollhans or the Pollhansmarkt is a fair in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock , which looks back on over 350 years of history. The market originated in 1654 when a small chapel in Holte Castle was inaugurated in honor of St. Ursula with a parish festival .
history
In the first decades, the so-called Holter Market took place in the immediate vicinity of the Holter Castle. Due to a decree by the Rietberger Grafenschaft , the festival had to leave the castle grounds in 1725 and found a new home on the area of the “Pollhans” farm, which is still the namesake of the market today. In 1901, due to the construction of the railway line Bielefeld - Schloß Holte - Paderborn ( Senne-Bahn ) , the festival moved again, this time to today's Pollhansplatz behind the Dresselhaus-Brockmann inn. The fair, also known as “Polle”, takes place there every third weekend in October from Saturday to Monday.
The Pollhansmarkt today
Today's Pollhansmarkt consists of a fair , a farmer's market, an economic show and hawkers . The center of the fair is a chain carousel and the historic Feldmann Ferris wheel , which belong to Pollhans like the herbal liqueur "Polhänser". The carousels are framed by several modern rides. Up to 300,000 people from all over the region visit the fair. Pollhans is one of the largest folk festivals in the East Westphalia-Lippe region . For comparison: the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock has 26,000 inhabitants.
The Pollhans always opens on the so-called Pollhans Saturday. Since 2006, an ecumenical service has been held in the Catholic St. Ursula Church at 1.30 p.m. , which commemorates the day of remembrance of St. Ursula and thus the origins of the Pollhansmarkt. Afterwards, the churchgoers, accompanied by the municipal wind orchestra, move on to Pollhansplatz, where the official opening by the mayor of the city of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock takes place with draft beer tapping .
Many shops, companies and authorities are closed on so-called Pollhansmontag. The city council , the city administration and invited guests meet on the morning of the Pollhans Monday for the traditional Pollhans tour . Until the 1990s the cattle market took place on Pollhansmontag, which reminded of the origins of the festival. He was replaced by the farmers market.
Several food and drink stalls are open during the fair. Live bands and DJs also perform in the festival tents . Admission to these concerts is free. At the end of the festival a place at 21:00 on Monday evening fireworks instead.
The city of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock offers shuttle bus services to all parts of the city and to neighboring towns on all three Pollhanstays.
350th anniversary 2004
From October 15 to 18, 2004 the Pollhansmarkt took place for the 350th time. Instead of the usual three festive days (Saturday to Monday), the City Council of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock decided to extend the "Pollhans" to four days (Friday to Monday) as an exception. In 2004 a "Pollhans-Film" was shot for the first time, which has since been available on DVD in some shops in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock. Around the roots of the festival to emphasize initiated the city administration also a move in which, among other local artisans , businessmen, farmers and clergy of the parishes aufliefen in period costume.
Despite the good weather, the introduction of the additional Pollhans Day in 2004 did not, contrary to expectations, lead to an increase in the number of visitors, which in 2004 was again around 250,000 visitors. The city council's initial consideration of possibly holding “Pollhans” for four days if this attempt was successful was rejected.
Current developments
In recent years, the city administration has been concerned about the Pollhansmarkt's balance sheet, which has always been in deficit for the city budget. From 1996 to 2003 so-called Pollhans- Seidel (beer glasses) with historical motifs were sold annually by the city administration , which entitle the mayor to free participation in the draft beer tapping by the mayor for a certain period of time at the opening of the Pollhansmarkt on Saturday. The Pollhans Seidel was replaced in 2004 by the sale of Pollhans buttons , hats and scarves. Even this measure did not lead to the desired sales and additional income for the city budget, so that a “Pollhans- Pin ” was finally introduced in 2005 , which also entitles the holder to certain discounts. Sales of the Pollhans-Pin, which was sponsored by RWE until 2006 , also left a lot to be desired, so that the council of the city of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock saw the need to increase the stand fees for showmen and carousel operators in order to avoid the now traditional “Pollhans - Deficit "to be eliminated. The Pollhans pin is still sold as a souvenir with changing motifs.
