Polycauliona polycarpa (syn. Xanthoria polycarpa ) is a species of leaf lichen thatis widespread in Central Europe andcolonizes tree bark.

description

Polycauliona polycarpa forms small, curved cushions with a bearing diameter of up to 2 cm. The thallus is yellow to gray-yellow in color and is usually so densely populated with (sometimes somewhat stalked) apothecia that the bearing lobes (up to 0.5 mm wide) are hardly visible (the Xanthoria parietina , which is also common, is significantly larger with wider lobes which are not covered by apothecaries, at least at the edge). The apothecia have a diameter of up to 2 mm and an orange disc (darker than the camp) with a lighter edge.

distribution

Lichen prefers to colonize thinner branches or forks of branches of shrubs and deciduous trees with nutrient-rich bark (e.g. sloe, hawthorn, ash, poplar, elder, willow). It is common in Europe, apart from the extreme north, and rare in the Mediterranean.
