Polycentrus is a genus of small freshwater fish that occurs in northeastern South America and the Amazon basin, in the catchment area of ​​the Rio Negro, and on Trinidad . There are two species, the South American polycentrus ( Polycentrus schomburgkii ), which lives on Trinidad and in the Orinoco estuary , in the three Guyanas and in coastal rivers of the Brazilian states of Amapá and Pará , and the Polycentrus jundia , which wasonly described in 2014, whichlivesin the catchment area of ​​the Rio Negro occurs.

Polycentrus species are 3 to 6 cm long and have an oval, laterally strongly flattened body. Your body color is brownish. A few vertical rows of dark, light-delineated points pattern the sides of the body. During the breeding season, males and females show different colors. The anal fin is supported by 11 to 13 rays. On the upper sideline there is a single, pored scale. The front sideline is missing. A barb on the lower jaw, as shown by the related leaf fish , is missing. The lower edge of the preoperculum is slightly serrated. The base of the caudal fin is not scaly.
