Polycentrus Jundia is a very small predator fish from the family of many spines (Polycentridae) which (in flood Igapó woods ) in the basin of the Negro in the Brazilian Amazon basin occurs. The species was not until the end of 2014 described and the second species of the genus Polycentrus after the coastal from Venezuela over Trinidad , Guiana to Brazilian state Amapá occurring South American many spines ( P. schomburgkii ). The kind of epithet jundia comes from the Tupí language , means something like "head with spikes" and refers to the skull bones sawn on the edge.

description

Like all spines, Polycentrus jundia has a strongly flattened body on the sides, a very large, protruding mouth and, with its brownish color, imitates dead leaves floating in water. The holotype has a length of 28.3 mm, all other specimens examined for the first description (paratypes) are smaller. The body height at the beginning of the anal fin is 38 to 42.4% of the standard length , the head length is 37.1 to 44.2% of the standard length. Polycentrus jundia differs from the South American multi- spined by two dark bands behind the eye and one below the eye (all are shorter than the diameter of the eye), a blunt snout, a reduced sawing of the lower edge of the lacrimal , whereby the number of thin teeth at the rear end between zero and two lies, a completely serrated rear edge of the vertical arm of the preoperculum , five piercing thorns on the gill cover , a strongly serrated edge of the interoperculare, a suboperculare with the lower edge sawn at the back and a cleithrum with the rear edge sawn at the top. One spot on the center of the gill cover is missing.

The fin formula is: Dorsal : XVI / 8, XVI / 7 or XV / 9, Anale XII / 6, XI / 6 or XII / 5, Pectorale II / 11, 12 or 14. Four rays of the pectoral fin extend over the vertical line which proceeds from the beginning of the anal fin. The number of scales in front of the dorsal fin is 19 to 21, at its base there are 19 to 20 scales, and 12 to 14 are found along the base of the anal fin.
