It isnative toeastern and central North America . The name "Solomon's Seal" refers to notches in the rhizome of the plant, which are said to resemble the ancient Hebrew seal of King Solomon. The species is often confused with Maianthemum racemosum , which, however, has upright flowers.

features

The plants have unbranched petioles about 30-150 cm (1-5 ft) in length, the veins of the alternate leaves run parallel. In May, clusters of white-green flowers begin to hang down from the stems, which, when pollinated, ripen into small blue berries. Excavated are the notches, which are supposed to resemble the seal of King Solomon, visible at the knots between the rhizome sections.

Name and system

use

In the past, the starch-rich rhizomes of P. biflorum were used as a "potato-like" food by the indigenous population for making bread or soups. The young sprouts are also edible; they can be used raw or cooked as a substitute for asparagus. The plants were also used as natural medicines. For this purpose z. B. the rhizomes are used to produce a tonic against rheumatism or gout. P. biflorum had nearly a dozen uses in naturopathy as an anti-inflammatory , sedative, and tonic. The plant is not used in large-scale agriculture.
