Polynesia Cup
The Polynesia Cup was a competition held three times from 1994 to 2000 for the five national soccer teams of Polynesia . Eligible were American Samoa , the Cook Islands , Samoa , Tahiti and Tonga .
In 1994, 1998 and 2000 the tournament served as a qualification for the Soccer Oceania Championship in 1996 , 1998 and 2000 .
The 1996 tournament was the "Polynesian part" of the first qualifying round of the Oceania Zone for the 1998 World Cup in France, with the winner playing a play-off for a place in the second round of the World Cup qualifying against the second of the Melanesia Cups had to contest. For this reason, American Samoa (not yet a FIFA member at the time) was not eligible to start. Tahiti was supposedly the strongest team in the region for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers.
