Ponneri ( Tamil : பொன்னேரி Ponneri [ ponːeːɾi ]) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 31,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Ponneri is located around 40 kilometers north of Chennai (Madras) in the Tiruvallur district on the Arani Nadi River in the hinterland of the coast of the Bay of Bengal . The border with the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh is around 24 kilometers away. Ponneri is the capital of the talk Ponneri .

Ponneri is located on the railway line from Chennai to Nellore and is supported by the Northern line of Vorortbahn Chennaier ( Chennai Suburban Railway ) operated. The national highway NH 5 , which runs from Chennai parallel to the east coast to the north, passes Ponneri around six kilometers west.

89 percent of the population of Ponneri are Hindus , 6 percent are Muslims and 4 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 87 percent of the population as their mother tongue. Eight percent speak Telugu , 2 percent speak Urdu, and 1 percent each speak Hindi and Malayalam .
