Systematics

Much used synonyms are Echium maculatum L. (valid name in the genus Echium ), Echium rubrum Jacq. and Echium russicum J.F. Gmel.

Occurrence and locations

Pontechium maculatum occurs in eastern Central Europe (South Moravia , Slovakia , Hungary) and in Southeastern Europe , in central Russia the distribution in the north extends to the 55th parallel . The total distribution area also includes Turkey and the Caucasus region . In Austria, Pontechium maculatum occurs very rarely in northern Burgenland ; this occurrence is threatened with extinction, but it cannot be ruled out that it is due to anointing .

It grows on steppe lawns, meadows, uncultivated slopes and in bushes.
