Poraqueiba sericea is a tree in the Icacinaceae family found in northern Brazil , Venezuela , Colombia , Peru, and Ecuador .

description

Poraqueiba sericea grows as an evergreen tree up to 25 meters high, in culture it remains significantly smaller at up to 8 meters. The trunk diameter reaches up to 50 centimeters.

The simple, alternate and short-stalked, slightly leathery leaves are mostly bare. The thick, stiff petiole is up to 3–3.5 inches long. The entire, ovate to elliptical or obovate leaves are 12-30 centimeters long and 7-17 centimeters wide. At the top they are pointed to tails. The stipules are missing.

Small, axillary panicles are formed. The fragrant, five-fold and hermaphrodite, very small, sessile flowers are white to yellow and have a double flower envelope . There are tiny cover sheets . The 5 silky hair on the outside, about 2 millimeters long sepals are short overgrown. The 5 fleshy petals with silky hair on the outside and up to 4 millimeters long, with three hairy ridges on the inside, are free. The 5 short stamens with fleshy, flattened stamens are free, with a widened connective. The unilocular ovary is constantly above a short stylus with smaller capitate scar .

Bald, yellow to orange or dark purple and ellipsoidal, about 6–9 centimeters long, thin-skinned, smooth, shiny stone fruits with a large, hard, woody and lonely stone core are formed.

use

The oily fruits are edible and are used raw or cooked. They are often mixed with cassava flour and eaten as a paste. They are known as Umari or Mari .

The non-durable wood is used for some applications.
