Porcupine ( Lakota : pȟahíŋ Sinte) is a settlement on community-free area, which for statistical purposes as a census-designated place (CDP) is performed. It lies in the Oglala Lakota County in the US -amerikanischen State South Dakota .

Porcupine is located at 43 ° 15'45 "north latitude and 102 ° 20'52" west longitude. The city of Rapid City is located 120 kilometers away in the northeast. Pine Ridge and the border with the state of Nebraska are each 25 kilometers to the south . The historic site of Wounded Knee is only three miles away.
History
The name of the place goes back to the North American porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum ) (English Porcupine ), which occurs in abundance in the area. With some imagination, the outlines of the place also resemble this animal. The area had been inhabited by Native Americans for a very long time , particularly the Lakota , a people from the Sioux- speaking family . The area is part of the Pine Ridge Reserve . There were repeated conflicts with the US Army, which gained notoriety through the massacre in neighboring Wounded Knee in 1890.
A declaration of independence unilaterally proclaimed the Republic of Lakotah with its seat in Porcupine by a small group of separatists in 2007 has no legitimacy whatsoever.
