Port Aransas is a city in Nueces County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in southeast Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico on Mustang Island , about 32 km east of Corpus Christi , separated by Aransas Bay and has a total area of 31.3 km 2 , of which 8.5 km 2 is water.
history
The island was first permanently colonized in 1855 by Capt. Robert Ainsworth Mercer from Lancaster, England. He settled on San José Island in 1850 and moved here in 1855 and built a ranch with sheep and cattle. Since there were many wild horses (mustangs) on the island, he named the island Mustang Island .
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 3,370 people in 1,542 households and 993 families lived here. The population density was 147.7 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 93.92% White, 0.42% African American, 1.25% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 2.17% other ethnic groups. About 1.36% were mixed race and 6.08% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,542 households, 22.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6% of these were married couples living together. 7.3% were single mothers and 35.6% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.64.
18.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 5.7% 18 to 24, 25.2% 25 to 44, 34.6% 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 108.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 106.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,432 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,719. Males had a median income of $ 28,000 versus females of $ 22,393. The per capita income was $ 23,681. 11.3% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.4% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 3.5% were 65 or older.
Wreck of the John Worthington
The wreck of the oil tanker John Worthington, which sank in 1943, remains in the shallow water of the Lydia Ann Channel to this day. When the water is clear you can see the wreck of the John Worthington underwater.
