Port Royale is a strategic economic simulation set in the New World between the 16th and 17th centuries . It was published in 2002 by the publisher Ascaron . The basic gameplay is similar to classics like Hanse or Der Patrizier .

The successor Port Royale 2 has been around since 2004 , in which the basic principle of the game has not changed. However, the new version no longer offers a multiplayer mode. In addition, there are no longer any limits to the expansion of the company.

On August 2, 2011, the publisher Kalypso Media announced in a press release that it had secured the rights to the Port Royale series and that the development of the third part of the series had already started. The third part of the series entitled Port Royale 3 was released on May 4, 2012 for the PC. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions should appear on August 31, 2012.

Gameplay

The player must choose his nation before the start, England, France, Holland or Spain are possible. Money is made through skillful trading, piracy, or the successful completion of orders and missions. In addition, the player can set up production facilities such as weaving mills or rum distilleries and plantations in cities for the production of, for example, grain, dyes or cocoa.

It should be noted that there are five different types of goods, the larger a city, the more different goods it needs. The five different types of goods are: basic goods, raw materials, finished goods, colonial goods and imported goods.

Trading, completing orders and sea battles with pirates or hostile nations bring the player experience points that affect his social rank. You start the game as an assistant and then rise through several levels (including a sailor, seaman) to become the governor of a city in your nation.

Piraten is a 2003 version of the MicroProse classic Pirates! with the game engine from Port Royale . In this variant of the game, the economic aspects take a back seat, instead it focuses on the military ones: As with the old Pirates! The aim of the game is to hijack enemy ships, to take booty, divide it up, dig up treasure and marry the most beautiful daughter of the governor.

Port Royale 2 has a similar gameplay to its predecessor. It takes you to the beginning of the 17th century, when the great colonial powers fought for supremacy in the Caribbean and cities could become very large - and also very small - in a short period of time. You take on the role of an inexperienced adventurer who has made it his goal to build a company.

You can trade between the cities with your ship, set up your own productions, accept orders and missions from different people, carry out pirate trips and both plunder and annex cities.

You can command up to 100 convoys and set up your own production in all cities. Gold can be used to buy up businesses from other resident traders. This can lead to a production monopoly for the entire Caribbean.

You can become the owner of your own city by annexing cities of hostile nations for the viceroy of one of the four nations and receiving land gifts in return. This has an influence on the gameplay, for example you can fall out of favor with a nation to such an extent that they hunt down the player with their military ships. In contrast to Port Royale , Port Royale 2 has been approved by the USK for ages 6 and up.

In the course of the bankruptcy of developer Ascaron , the current owner of the series Kalypso Media Port Royale 2 put on again at the end of December 2009. The distribution took place under the brand "Purple Hills". In this version, which contains some improvements and bug fixes, the copy protection has also been removed - this previously prevented Port Royale 2 from running under Windows Vista and Windows 7 . The earlier version, which appeared among other things in the software pyramid under the brand "Green Pepper", could only run under a maximum of Windows XP .

Port Royale 3 is similar to both its predecessors and the Patrician IV game , also published by Kalypso Media. The PC version was released on May 4, 2012; the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions on August 31, 2012.

Similar to Port Royale and Patrician 2 , a multiplayer mode is integrated. This allows up to four players to compete directly against each other.
