Porta Bohemica
Porta Bohemica , also Bohemian Gate or Czech Česká brána , is the name given to the beginning of the Elbe breakthrough through the Bohemian Central Uplands . The valley pass is about 140 meters above sea level, the peaks of the flanking mountain peaks of Lovoš (left Elbe) and Radobýl (right Elbe) reach 570 and 390 meters respectively.
landscape
On both sides of the river, steep, approx. 100 m high cliffs flank the Elbe stream over a length of 1 km. To the right of the Elbe, at the beginning of the narrow valley, is the striking rock cliff of the Dreikreuzberg (Czech: Kalvárie , part of the Hradek) with three crosses visible from afar at the summit. The steep slopes on the Dreikreuzberg were once also used for viticulture , the derelict terraces between the rocky areas are evidence of this.
geology
At the Porta Bohemica, the crystalline underground rocks have been raised to the surface as clods. They essentially consist of gneiss , mica slate and rhyolites , which are also typical in the Eastern Ore Mountains. The Porta Bohemica is one of the few places where these underground rocks in the Bohemian Central Uplands are exposed on the surface. Other sites are only in the neighboring Oparenské udolí ( Wopparner valley ) and on the north-eastern edge of the mountains in the valley of the Bílina ( Biela ).
traffic
The country road running through Porta Bohemica is trunk road 30, Lovosice - Ústí nad Labem , on the left of the Elbe. Two railway lines flank the Elbe, the Praha – Děčín line on the left (formerly kk Northern State Railway ) and the Kolín – Děčín line on the right (Elbe Valley Railway, formerly Austrian Northwest Railway ).
The D 8 motorway from Prague to Ústí nad Labem, which was completed at the end of 2016 (further in Germany as Federal Motorway 17 ), bypasses the bottleneck of Porta Bohemica in the Bohemian Central Uplands on the western flank of the Lovoš Mountain . In order to underline the European dimension of the connection of this motorway ( European route 55 ), the D 8 is referred to as Via Porta Bohemica in official publications .
Viticulture
The wine that is still grown today in the area of Porta Bohemica near Velké Žernoseky (Großtschernosek) and Žalhostice ( Tschalositz) is famous . Formerly known as Tschernoseker , it is now sold under the Porta Bohemica brand, among other things .
