Velké Žernoseky (German: Groß Tschernosek , formerly Czernosek ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic , located in the Elbe Valley near Porta Bohemica in the Bohemian Central Mountains . The place is known as a famous wine-growing region in Bohemia.
history
Velké Žernoseky was first mentioned in a document in 1057. In the 12th century the place came into the possession of the Cistercians from the Altzella monastery near Nossen in Saxony . The cultivation of wine by the Cistercians around Velké Žernoseky has been documented since the 14th century. The large wine cellars under the castle, which are still in use today, were also laid out by the Cistercians. Velké Žernoseky remained the property of the monks until 1437. 1667 came the rule including the neighboring Libochovany to the lords of Nostitz-Rieneck . In 1916 the Prague company Oppelt bought the late baroque chateau with the large wine cellars.
traffic
The former Austrian Northwest Railway has been running through Velké Žernoseky since 1874, but the Velké Žernoseky station is located in the corridors of nearby Žalhostice ( Tschalositz ). A ferry connection leads to the other bank of the Elbe, to Malé Žernoseky .
