Scheme of the Irish portal Tombarten

The Portal Tomb of Ahaglaslin (rarely also Aghaglaslin , Irish Achadh Glaislinne ) in Ireland is located east of Ross Carbery near the south coast and near the stone circle of Bohonagh and is one of only two Portal Tombs in County Cork . It is marked as Callaheencladdig on the historical map . Portal Tombs are megalithic systems in the British Isles , in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

Ahaglaslin is located on a ledge near the hilltop on a steep cliff in dense sea gorse . In the literature it is also described as a wedge tomb because it tapers in shape and has a double facade, but it also has all the attributes of a portal tomb.

The access to the chamber is in the east between two high portal stones. It is 1.5 m long and 1.1 m wide. The southern portal stone leans against the northern one. The sides and the rear wall of the chamber are each formed from one stone. On the outside, two plates lean against the south side of the chamber and three small stones against the north side. The chamber is covered by a flat, frightening, sloping capstone. It rests on the portal stones and two large stones to the west.

Flanking stones

Flank stones are occasionally found in front of the portal stones of Portal Tombs on one or both sides, suggesting a simple courtyard or ante , as shown by some court tombs . Since Portal Tombs, more than other types, hardly show any traces of a cairn or hill, the front part has probably been cleared away with the hill. Individual flank stones occur at Menlough in County Galway and the Browneshill Dolmen in County Carlow in Ireland and at Tirnony Dolmen in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland , while at Ahaglaslin low stones lie in front of both sides of the portal and form a funnel-shaped entrance with other stones. A crescent-shaped settlement of low stones has been found at Ticloy , County Antrim , Northern Ireland.
