The Portland class is a further development of the Northampton class . Originally six Portland- class ships were to be put into service, but due to the development of the New Orleans- class only two ships were completed. Compared to the Northampton class, the Portland class ships had improved armor and 12.7 cm guns . In contrast to the New Orleans class, the Portland class did not use torpedo launchers. The ships were manufactured as flagships .
Construction / conversions
The ships of the Portland class were in the shipyards New York Shipbuilding Corporation and Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation built and ran in 1931 and 1932 from the stack. Before the outbreak of war, the two ships received a chimney extension. This was reduced again as part of an improvement based on the model of the last remaining Northampton- class cruisers .
