The Portnahaven Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish Portnahaven on the Hebridean island of Islay . It is located on the northern outskirts, north of the A847 that connects Portnahaven with Bridgend . On July 20, 1971, Portnahaven Church was added to the British List of Monuments in Category B. The clergyman had a rectory 300 m to the east , which is also a listed building and is now used as a residential building.

history

The Portnahaven Church was the side church in Parish Kilchoman after Kilchoman Church, which was completed in 1827 . It was built to offer a nearby church to the people of the south of the Rhinns of Islay . In 1849 the Parish Kilchoman was split up and an independent Parish Portnahaven was established with the Portnahaven Church as the main church. In 1962 the Parish was merged again with Kilchoman and finally in 2006 with Kilmeny . Services are still held regularly in Portnahaven Church.

description

Just like the associated rectory, the church building was planned and built by Thomas Telford around 1828. It is kept simple and has a T-shaped floor plan. Two symmetrical entrance doors and two windows are embedded in the 16.1 m long front. These are kept simple and end with pressed pointed arches . At the west end there is a small bell tower, which ends with a pyramid roof , on the slate-covered gable roof . A small finial adorns the eastern gable . The facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique. Decorative elements, for example on the building edges, are made of reddish sandstone . The interior is equipped with galleries and largely corresponds to the original condition. The pulpit is positioned in the southern part of the building.
