Porto Judeu is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Angra do Heroísmo . It has 2501 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

geography

Porto Judeu is located on the south coast of Terceira Island, 11 km east of the island's capital Angra do Heroismo. There are many witnesses of volcanic activity in the area around the city. These include the two Ilhéus das Cabras , remains of an extinct volcano in the sea, which are in front of the city in the southwest at a distance of a good 1 km. To the east of the city, the extinct crater Contendas rises up from the plain at a height of 148 m. The 150 m deep Gruta das Agulhas grotto is also of volcanic origin.

history

The exact founding date of the place is not known, but Porto Judeu is considered to be the oldest village on the entire island. The first church is said to have been built before 1470. The rights of a "vila", which literally means "small town", were granted to the place on February 12, 1502, but withdrawn a year later because the neighboring town of São Sebastião was granted city rights. In 1573, the Forte de Santo António was built to protect the place from pirate raids.

At the harbor you can see some remains of the wall of the Forte de Santo António fortress built in 1573 . Not far from there is the Miradouro Maria Augusta de Castro viewpoint , on which a memorial plaque commemorates a singer who used to be very famous on Terceira, and from where the Ilhéus das Cabras islands off Porto Judeu can be seen particularly well.

As in many other places in Portugal, a monument ( Monumento dos Combatentes ) was erected in Porto Judeu to commemorate those who fell in the former Portuguese colonies. The monument in Porto Judeu differs from comparable monuments in that it not only consists of a memorial stone with a name plaque, but has the shape of a boat in bright blue waves.

The Império do Espírito Santo do Terreiro is a larger Holy Spirit chapel that was built in 1916 and - as is typical for the island of Terceira - colorfully painted. What is unusual, however, is the two-storey construction with an outside staircase leading to the main room with the altar.

The year of foundation of the three-aisled, several times rebuilt and expanded parish church Igreja Paroquial Santo António is not known.
