Porto Novo ( Portuguese for New Port ) is the largest district ( concelho ) on the island of Santo Antão in the northwest of Cape Verde .

Porto Novo is south of Ribeira Grande and southwest of Paul . The district covers 72% of the island's land area and is home to 41% of the population. It is the second largest district in terms of area and has the seventh largest population in Cape Verde. The highest point on the island is the Topo da Coroa at 1,979 m above sea level .

In 1971 the old Santo Antão district was divided into 3 districts: Ribeira Grande , Paul and Porto Novo.

politics

The Movement for Democracy was the strongest party until 2012 , then the PAICV took power and is now the ruling party with 10 seats.
