Crater from a grave in the ancient cemetery

On the northern outskirts, right next to the Corinth Canal, there is another 300 m long piece of the Diolkos . This paved route for the transport of ships across the Isthmus of Corinth was built around 600 BC. Built in BC. A cemetery from the Archaic and Classical periods (6th – 5th centuries BC) was found nearby . The dead were buried here in sarcophagi and received many valuable grave goods such as Corinthian and Attic ceramics, bronze mirrors and tiles in the form of a sphinx .

An important settlement developed south of the cemetery, but its ancient name is not known. Foundations, wells, pottery shards and stone blocks from the 5th century BC were found here. The finds are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Corinth and the Museum of Isthmia .
