Possessions ( jap. 九十九 , Tsukumo ., See tsukumogami ) is a Japanese computer-animated anime - short film by Shuhei Morita from 2012. Subject of the film are the so-called tsukumogami that are part of the Japanese folk belief Shinto are. Over time, they are neglected utensils that are animated by spirits after 100 years.

action

A night in 18th century Japan: a hiker comes to an abandoned shrine during a stormy storm. He asks for shelter for the night, but in the light of the lightning sees rubbish and discarded things inside. After he closes the door, the interior of the shrine is transformed. The man is suddenly faced with a wall full of worn paper screens. A little paper frog with a small paper umbrella appears and sings about the umbrellas that are broken and need to be thrown away. The man admires the old and rare umbrellas. He opens a wooden box that he has with him. It turns out that he is a craftsman. He repairs the umbrellas and finally the little umbrella that the paper frog has with him. The frog thanks you and hops away with the umbrella before vanishing into thin air. The man is amazed.

In an adjoining room, he is confronted with broken fabric wallpaper, which he repairs by sewing strips of fabric together. The fabric disappears after its work is done. In the third room the things thrown away are stacked as high as a man. A foul smell emanates from the mountain of rubbish, which makes hikers hold their noses. The mountain suddenly piles up like a kite and rushes out of the hiker. He begins to pray, thanking all the spirits that populate the shrine, and the dragon devours him.

The man wakes up the next morning in a praying position. The shrine is as he found it the night before, the shape of the garbage is reminiscent of that of a dragon. The thunderstorm has subsided, but the man in front of the shrine finds a repaired paper umbrella and a few pieces of fabric sewn together. He takes both and wanders away from the shrine.
