The post office at Darmstadt Central Station is a cultural monument.
Architecture and history
The former imperial post office in Darmstadt was built according to plans by the Frankfurt architect Friedrich Sander . Sander's symmetrical two-story building with a large hipped roof was opened at the same time as the inauguration of Darmstadt's main station in 1912.
The building was designed in the traditionalist style and decorated with baroque ornamentation of historicism . The facade is clad with shell limestone . The Putten - reliefs and elaborate wrought iron railings on the windows adorn the administration building .
The post office was gutted and rebuilt in 1990. The facade remained standing and was renovated. The roof was re-covered.
The building blends in harmoniously with its surroundings and closes off the Platz der Deutschen Einheit to the north.
Monument protection
For architectural and historical reasons, the building is considered a cultural monument .
