history

Remains of settlements in Potoci from Roman times were discovered in 1882.

In 1958, the Mostar Military Technical Institute was opened in Potoci , a branch of the Belgrade Military Technical Institute. Chemical weapons were produced in this facility . From 1959 to 1965 phosgene was produced there on a smaller scale , and from 1970 sarin and mustard gas . In addition, research was carried out on other substances that could potentially be used in the war. With the increasing destabilization of Yugoslavia from the end of 1990, the production of chemical weapons ceased. In July 1991 the research equipment began to be shipped to the Central Institute in Belgrade and large parts of the arsenal in Potoci were destroyed. The facility was officially decommissioned in January 1992 and completely demolished in 2004.

During the Bosnian War , the Potoci Primary School served as an internment camp for Croatian prisoners from June to December 1993.
