Poul Erik Bech (born March 15, 1938 - April 5, 2014 ) was a Danish football player and coach .

Athletic career

Bech played for Vejle BK , among others , but did not make the breakthrough to a long-term playing career in higher-class football. In October 1962, the midfielder made his debut for the club in the championship, until his departure from the club in 1967 he played a total of five championship games.

Working full-time as a teacher, Bech initially worked primarily in the field of young talent. In 1976 he took over the coaching position at Vejle BK for the first time as the successor to Ernst Netuka . With a 2-1 win over the Boldklubben in 1909 in the final of the national cup , he won his first title the following year. In the 1977/78 European Cup Winners' Cup , he led the club into the quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history, but two defeats against the Dutch representative Twente Enschede meant the elimination. At the same time he was all the more successful with the team in the championship, at the end of the 1978 season he won the fourth championship title in the club's history. Then he handed over the coaching position to Jürgen Wähling .

Between 1980 and 1983 Bech coached league rivals Aarhus GF . Under his leadership, the former elevator team established itself in the upper third of the table. In 1984 he returned to Vejle BK and crowned his first season with the championship title. He was then voted Coach of the Year. However, he could not confirm the success with the team, in the European Cup of National Champions 1985/86 the club failed in the first round at the eventual winner Steaua Bucharest and only reached midfield up to Bech's renewed resignation in 1987.

Bech returned to youth work and was responsible for various youth selections for the Danish football association Dansk Boldspil Union until the mid-1990s . He later coached Fredericia FC .

Beck died at the age of 76 in spring 2014 after a brief illness.
