Athletic career

Appointed to the DFB youth team as a youth player for the Hamburg club Grün-Weiß 07 , he went to Switzerland in 1960 , where he played for FC Luzern until 1964 . Back in Germany, Jürgen Wähling played in the Regionalliga Berlin from 1964 and one season in the Bundesliga in 1965/66 : for the Tasmania Berlin team , he made 34 appearances by 1967, including twelve in the Bundesliga scored a goal in the regional league. Tasmania only played one season in the upper house of football and went down in the history of the Bundesliga: the team moved up to the Bundesliga for sport-political reasons, as Hertha BSC 's license was revoked. Tasmania rose immediately with 8:60 points and 15:10 goals and still holds some negative records in the Bundesliga. Jürgen Wähling, although he was used as a striker, could not contribute a Bundesliga goal for Tasmania. In 1967 Wähling went back to Langenthal, Switzerland, where he was also a player-coach in the 1969/70 season. Then he ended his playing career.

Jürgen Wähling was more successful as a coach. From 1970 to 1971 he coached the selection of the Hamburg Football Association . From 1972 to 1974 he trained the amateurs of SV Werder Bremen . From 1974 Wähling worked as a trainer in Denmark and celebrated some successes there. From 1986 to 1988 Wähling was the coach of Hannover 96 . Hanover was relegated from the Bundesliga in 1985/86 and committed him with the aim of creating direct promotion. Wähling was considered a calm and level-headed coach and strengthened the team with experienced players. At the start of the 1986 season, Hanover lived up to its role as a favorite in the 2nd Bundesliga and was at the top of the table at the winter break. In the second half of the season the team showed nerves, but still managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga as first place. In the 1987/88 season Jürgen Wähling reached tenth place in the Bundesliga with Hanover. However, in 1988/89 Hanover started with a series of nine games without a win in a row, which led to Jürgen Wähling's dismissal.

After his time as a Bundesliga coach, Jürgen Wähling worked for various clubs in various positions, including until 1996 as a manager at FC St. Pauli and in 1999 in Turkey as a coach at Trabzonspor .
