Former presidential villa

The Presidential Villa on the Hohenwarte in the 19th Viennese district of Döbling was the official residence of four Austrian Federal President of the Second Republic.

history

The villa at Hohe Warte 36 was built around the middle of the 19th century. The building on the approximately 10,000 square meter property had been in the possession of the married couple Alfred and Ella Götzl since 1938 . In 1939 the Jewish couple fled, and in 1941 the property was “Aryanized” . The villa was badly damaged during the Second World War. In 1950 the house and property were returned to Alfred Götzl and his daughter - Ella Götzl had died during the war. In 1951 they sold the villa for 145,000 schillings to the lawyer Kurt Grimm who, after the renovation, sold the villa on to the Republic of Austria for 9 million schillings in 1965. On the basis of the Art Restitution Act of 1998, another restitution was requested because of “extreme injustice”. This was rejected by the arbitral tribunal in 2005.

The Austrian Federal Presidents Franz Jonas , Rudolf Kirchschläger , Kurt Waldheim and Thomas Klestil lived here during their tenure . According to the Remuneration Act, the Federal President, like the Federal Chancellor , is entitled to an official residence. If this is not used, the rental and operating costs will be reimbursed.

Since Federal President Heinz Fischer kept his residence at Josefstädter Straße 21 in the Josefstadt district and the renovation costs for the now desolate 764 square meter building with its own swimming pool and wine cellar were too high, the federal law on the sale of immovable federal assets and on changing the Federal law on the establishment of a Marchfeldschlösser Revitalisierungs und Betriebsgesellschaft mbH authorized the Federal Minister of Finance to sell the properties at Hohe Warte 36 and Hohe Warte 34.

The sales proceeds were expected to be around five million euros . The offer began on March 30, 2007 and ended on May 24. On June 1, 2007 the property was sold to EPAM Immobilien GmbH . The parties have agreed not to disclose the sales price. According to a newspaper report, it should be unexpectedly high, at eight million euros.

The building, which was not a listed building , was demolished between December 2009 and January 2010. Apartments in the upper price segment are being built on the property.

Another residence

The Mürzsteg hunting lodge has served as the summer residence of the Federal Presidents since 1947 .
