Presidential election in Mali 2013
The 2013 presidential elections in Mali began with the first ballot on July 28, 2013. The runoff election took place on August 11. This was preceded by a military coup against President Amadou Toumani Touré in March 2012 because, according to leading soldiers , he had acted too weakly in the civil war in the north of the country . The military installed Dioncounda Traoré as interim president. Due to interventions by the donor countries led by France, which had reduced humanitarian aid funds, a date for new elections was set. At the time of the election, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad was still very influential in the north and the government was forced to negotiate with the organization to hold the elections. Since May 2013, 15,000 blue helmet soldiers have been stationed in the country to enable a non-violent course of the election.
Candidates
28 candidates ran for the election, including former Prime Ministers Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta ( Rassemblement pour le Mali ), Soumana Sacko (National Convention for Africa Solidarity) and Modibo Sidibé . Other important candidates were Jamille Bittar (Party for Economic and Social Development of Mali), Soumaïla Cissé ( Front for Democracy and the Republic ), Sidibé Aminata Diallo, Cheick Modibo Diarra (Rally for Mali's Development) and Aissata Haidara Cissé , the only female candidate .
Election process
Even before the election, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and Soumaïla Cissé were favorites. The first ballot took place on July 28, 2013. The election was peaceful, which the European Union welcomed. According to a report by the weekly newspaper “ Die Zeit ” on August 2, ex-Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta emerged victorious from the first round of elections. He faced the runoff election on August 11 against Soumaïla Cissé.
Election result
Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was the winner of the first ballot with 39.23 percent of the votes cast. With that he missed an absolute majority of at least 50 percent of the votes and had to assert himself in a runoff election against Soumaïla Cissé, who was in second place.
In the runoff election, after counting around two thirds of the votes, Cissé prematurely admitted his defeat and congratulated Keïta on the victory.
