The IBA is an important protected area for Seychelles Blue Pigeons .

The Praslin National Park and surrounding areas Important Bird Area is located in the south of the island of Praslin in the Seychelles in the western Indian Ocean .

geography

The Important Bird Area (IBA) extends over 700  hectares and includes areas from the coast to the highest point on the island at an altitude of 367  m . The area includes the 330 hectare Praslin National Park and includes additional areas to the southwest of it. The mountain slopes are made up of mixed secondary forest , which has a high proportion of native plants, including all six endemic palm species of the Seychelles. This also includes the palm forest of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Vallée de Mai , as well as many small streams and waterfalls. The southeastern part of the area is drier and characterized by boulders and caves between the bush forest.

fauna

The area has been designated as an IBA (Important Bird Sanctuary) by BirdLife International because there are still populations of Seychelles falcons (Falco araea), paradise fruit pigeons (Alectroenas pulcherrima), Seychelles sailors (Aerodramus elaphrus), thick-billed bulbüls (Hypsipetes crassnirostennectris) and seychelles birds dussumieri) can be found. In addition, there are Seychelles tree frogs (Tachycnemis seychellensis), six species of crawfish (caecilians), four species of geckos , two skinks and two species of snakes, all of which are endemic. Hawksbill sea turtles nest on the beaches and green sea turtles have their grazing grounds off the coast. In addition, most of the Seychelles bat (Pteropus seychellensis) population can be found in the reserve.
