history

Pellegrino Artusi , the founder of the Italian national cuisine , referred to the Presnitz as dolce di tedescheria - "dessert of the Germans (countries)" - and thus pointed to its Austrian origin.

Legend has it that the pastry was invented in 1832 at a Trieste baking competition on the occasion of the visit of Empress Sisi , and that Presnitz was an Italian corruption of the Princess' price . However, the fact that Sisi was born five years later speaks against the truthfulness of the beautiful legend. In fact, the word is an adaptation of the Slovenian word presnec .
