Sommer wie Winter ( fr . : Presque rien ) is a French film from 2000 directed by Sébastien Lifshitz .

action

Mathieu spends his summer holidays by the sea before starting his planned architecture studies in autumn. His mother is deeply depressed as she suffers from the death of her baby who died of cancer. There is not much that Mathieu can do with his younger sister during his vacation. On the beach, Mathieu meets the attractive Cédric who is looking for a friend. After the first shy kiss, a stormy affair develops between the two young men.

Eighteen months later, Mathieu suffers from the separation from Cédric. After a suicide attempt, a psychiatrist sends Mathieu back to the sea, where he is supposed to understand what happened there when the relationship broke. The film doesn't reveal what caused the relationship to break down. Back at the sea, Mathieu meets Pierre, another former friend of Cédric. Mathieu feels that in Pierre he has found someone who understands him.

background

The film alternates between the two storylines in summer and winter and is not structured chronologically. The contrast between the two plot periods in Mathieu's life is hereby emphasized by the screenwriter Sébastien Lifshitz . The soundtrack comes from the Irish singer Perry Blake from his album Still Life .

criticism

“A portrait of an adolescent who optically focuses on the sensual side of sexuality, albeit with sometimes drastic scenes. The unconventional narrative confuses with many leaps in time and loses credibility because the film only deals with the protagonist's personality development in a hint. "
