Prislav

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prislav (* around 1115; † between 1165 and 1175) was under the Danish King Waldemar I. Jarl of the Danish island of Lolland .

Prislav grew up as the son of the Abodritic Prince Niklot together with his brothers Pribislaw and Wertislaw in what is now Mecklenburg . Prislav already adopted the Christian faith during his father's lifetime. Therefore, according to a report by the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus , he is said to have been chased away by his father. In contrast, the Danish Knýtlinga saga tells that Prislav was captured by the Danes. Since then Prislav lived in Denmark. There he married Katharina Knudsdotter, a daughter of the last Abodritic velvet ruler Knud Lavard and sister of Waldemar the Great . This step made him a bargaining chip for Waldemar and a danger for Niklot and his sons: due to the fraternity, as a member of the Abodritic princely family, he was entitled to rule over the Abodritic land; as Knud Lavard's grandson, his sons were legitimized by inheritance as Abodritic velvet rulers. In fact, with Katharina, Prislav had two sons, Kanut and Waldemar. This is probably one of the reasons why Prislav and his father were irreconcilable. In 1160 Prislav took part on the side of Bernhard I of Ratzeburg in the campaign of Waldemar I against Niklot. Prislav is said to have commented on the news of the death of his father, who probably fell from the hand of Bernhard I, as an unwelcome interruption of his dinner with insults. The subsequent installation of his older brother Pribislaws as prince of the Abodrites in 1164 by Henry the Lion thwarted Waldemar I's plans to raise Prislav to prince of the Abodrites and in this way gain access to the Abodrite land.

Waldemar I enfeoffed Prislav with Danish islands ("magna nobilium insularum pars"), of which only Lolland is known, which later appears in the possession of his son. Possibly also included Alsen to Prislavs equipment.
