The PTL was founded by Helmut Harms in 1948 in Lübeck - Schlutup . In 1955 the training of physics engineers began and was recognized by the state.

In 1963 PTL moves to its current location on Feldstrasse in Wedel. Five years later, in 1968, the training courses for IT assistant and IT engineer are introduced. Just one year later, the Wedel University of Applied Sciences was founded at the same location, taking over the engineering courses (from now on referred to as physical engineering and technical informatics). The PTL will remain in place and the training for IT technical assistants will be introduced. In 2009 the company was renamed the Private Vocational School PTL Wedel and the new focus on software technology was introduced.
