In Germany one is private university a university in private ownership , which for the award of academic degrees is justified. Private universities include private universities , universities of applied sciences , and colleges of art and music . Non-state universities owned by a religious community, on the other hand, are referred to as church universities .

Germany

State recognition

The state recognition of private universities is regulated in the Federal Higher Education Act (HRG) (HRG §70) and in the higher education laws of the federal states, whereby the federal states can make regulations that go beyond the higher education framework law. Responsibility for the institutional accreditation of non-state universities lies with the Science Council .

Duration

In 2013 there were 125 state-recognized, privately-owned universities in Germany with 156,000 students enrolled.

Of the 125 private universities, 58 are run as a GmbH and 47 as a GmbH . In addition, private universities are run in the legal form of an association (eV) , a stock corporation (AG) and as a foundation university .

The expenditures of the private universities amounted to 919 million euros in 2013 (without university clinics in Gießen and Marburg ). Looking at individual types of expenditure, staff expenditure is the largest category of expenditure at 52%, as in most educational institutions, followed by current material expenditure (44%) and capital expenditure (4%). The current expenditure per student in 2013 at privately owned universities amounted to 5 690 euros.

The expenditures of public and private universities cannot be compared directly because there are serious differences in the task program, in the subject structure, in the financing and the definition of expenditure. Private universities often concentrate on less costly humanities and social science subjects and are generally less research-intensive.

In Germany, the AKAD Hochschule Rendsburg (now AKAD Hochschule Pinneberg), founded in 1980, was the first state-recognized private technical college. Two years later, the University of Witten / Herdecke , founded in 1982, was the first private, state-recognized university.

The share of students at private universities was around 5% in 2010, it is growing steadily and is now around 10%.

On January 14th, 2004 the working group of private universities in Germany was founded in Heidelberg and in May of the same year the Association of Private Universities was founded. V. More than 80 universities have joined the association so far.

  • Business Science Institute / European Institute for Knowledge & Value Management

The Executive DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration) is a doctoral program offered jointly by the Business Science Institute (BSI) and the European Institute for Knowledge and Value Management (EIKV) in cooperation with the University of Lyon and the University of Sydney in Luxembourg. It is aimed exclusively at active managers with at least five years of management experience and an MBA degree (or equivalent).

  • DTMD University for Digital Technologies in Medicine and Dentistry

DTMD University is a private university under Luxembourg law recognized by the state as an “Institut de Formation Continue” and operated by a private Luxembourg institution. The DTMD offers dedicated postgraduate, part-time courses for doctors, dentists and dental technicians as well as medical nursing staff in cooperation with the European Competence Center for Digital Technologies in Health Care, the State Dental Associations and renowned European universities.

  • Sacred Heart University

The SHU (Sacred Heart University Luxembourg) is the European branch of the University Campus Fairfield, CT (USA). The SHU Jack Welch College of Business has been offering Master’s programs in Luxembourg since 1991, which are tailored to the needs of working people.

  • ISEC University of Economics

The Institut Supérieur de l'Économie (ISEC), founded by the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and Crafts, is a university recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Their Bachelor and Master courses are aimed at working people in Luxembourg and the Greater Region who want to develop further within their company and who want to consolidate their special knowledge through a university degree.
