Prix Føroyar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prix Føroyar was the national rock and pop competition in the Faroe Islands and was organized by the House of the North , Kringvarp Føroya and the Føroya Undirhaldstónleikarafelag from 1995 to 2005.

The Prix , as it is called by the Faroese , was held for the first time in 1995 and has been held every two years since then. After stars like Eivør Pálsdóttir and Teitur Lassen were able to lay the foundations for their careers there, the Prix enjoyed increasing international attention.

Since the beginning, the Prix Føroyar has been broadcast on the national radio Útvarp Føroya and television Sjónvarp Føroya . In 2005 it could be seen live worldwide on portal.fo .

Prix 2005

With the final on April 23rd in Tórshavn , the Prix Føroyar will be named Atlantic Music Event - a concession to its increased international importance for the local music scene.

Of the 36 groups that applied for this year's Prix, 24 made it to the preliminary round, where they performed at four concerts in Fuglafjørður , and 2 groups each qualified for the semi-finals on April 2nd in Tvøroyri . There, three groups were selected by the people via SMS as finalists: Terji Rasmussen & Band, Eyðun Nolsøe and GoGo Blues (winners).

What is striking here is that they are all established musicians (with the exception of the lead singer of GoGo Blues), so that criticism was also raised as to whether the competition should not be generally geared towards the young.

The end

On September 21, 2006 the Faroese radio announced the end of the Prix Føroyar. The radio wants to concentrate more on other events, while the House of the North wants to develop a new concept, but it should no longer be a competition.

The day before, the former Clickhaze founder and today's concert organizer Jón Tyril said that the time of the Prix , where it was needed to develop the Faroese music scene, was over. This is now trained so that one should better turn to other things. Tyril himself is the organizer of the Faroese elimination competitions for the Global Battle of the Bands , in which the Faroe Islands successfully participated in 2005 in London.
