Identification letters of semiconductor components

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Code letters of semiconductor components are used for quick identification of typical electrical components based on semiconductors .

Pro-electron standard / EECA

The Pro-Electron standard, today managed by the EECA ( European Electronic Component Manufacturers Association , dt. "European Association of Manufacturers of Electronic Components") provides the following scheme:

  • 2-3 letters:
    • 1st letter: semiconductor material
    • 2nd letter: type of semiconductor
    • 3rd letter: Field of application: (only indicated if higher commercial / military requirements for the component were taken into account in the development)
  • 2-4-digit sequence of digits that individualizes the component and defines a specific data sheet
  • possibly further combinations of letters / numbers that differentiate variants of the same design with different characteristics

Meaning of the 3rd letter

Then there may be a third letter . This is usually used to identify types that meet special industrial or military requirements. The letters R, S, T, V, W, X, Y or Z are often used, but others can also appear. These symbols do not indicate any special properties.

Other names

If a semiconductor is marked with 3 letters, then the following combination of digits is usually two or three digits, otherwise the following sequential number is three or, rarely, four digits. Additional combinations of letters or digits can optionally be attached to this, which for example indicate different dielectric strength or gain values.

Other standards

  • JEDEC standard JESD370B (USA), 1N ... for diodes; 2N ... for transistors
  • JIS standard (Japan), 2SA ..., 2SB ... for PNP and 2SC ..., 2SD ... for NPN transistors, 2SJ ..., 2SK ... for MOS Fets, 1S. .. for diodes
  • Industry standards : Many semiconductor manufacturers have switched to using their own company-specific identifiers; Motorola , for example, introduced MJ and MJE for transistors.
