Prokles (Sparta)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prokles ( Greek Προκλῆς Proklḗs ), son of Aristodemos and Argeia , was a mythical king of ancient Sparta , who lived around the 11th century BC. Should have lived.

The ancient traditions about Prokles are regarded by scholars as a later construction of history. He was considered the progenitor of the royal family of the Eurypontids and, together with his twin brother Eurysthenes, the founder of the double kingship in Sparta. In their youth, after the early death of their father, the brothers are said to have been under the care of Theras , a brother of their mother's.

According to Hellanikos, both created the Spartan constitution after they came of age . Strabo, on the other hand, citing Ephoros , reports that they divided Laconia into six parts and built cities on the country. The adult brothers are said to have been enemies until the end of their lives.
