Theras ( Greek Θήρας Thḗras ) is a mythical figure in Greek history as part of the Doric migration . According to the histories of Herodotus , he was the son of Autesion , king of Thebes , grandson of Teisamenos and descendant of the Phoenician ruler Kadmos .

Autesion had to leave Thebes with his two children because of an oracle , joined the Dorians and settled the Laconia region with them . His daughter Argeia had married the Dorian king Aristodemus . After the death of Aristodemus, his son Theras became the guardian of his underage nephews Eurysthenes and Prokles and ruled in place of the underage children of the previous king over Laconia and the resulting city of Sparta . When the children came of age and took over the rule, Theras decided to leave Sparta and the region together with Minyans resident in Laconia and to settle on the Aegean island of Kalliste ( ancient Greek Καλλίστῃ ), which had been settled by relatives of the Kadmos eight generations ago.

According to Herodotus , he set sail with three galleys with 30 rowers each, was recognized by the inhabitants of the island as king and she was subsequently referred to as Thera ( modern Greek Θήρα Thira ) after him . Today the island is mostly called Santorini .

In his description of Greece, Pausanias describes the move of Theras to the island of Kalliste / Thera as the planned establishment of a Doric colony with the support of Eurysthenes and Procles.

The founding of the city of Alt-Thera on a mountain ridge on the island of Thera in the 9th century BC can be archaeologically proven . Prove.
