Church building

Pastor Franz Küstner from Duderstadt built the neo-Gothic, three-aisled church of St. Peter and Paul from 1854 to 1858 according to the plans of the Cologne cathedral builder Vinzenz Statz . The church was by the apostolic nuncio of Munich Flavio Chigi in his capacity as Apostolic Vicar of Anhalt on October 27, 1858 consecrated . The construction work was directed by the Dessau building officer Vieth. The construction costs amounted to 29,522 Reichstaler, 20 silver groschen and 5 pfennigs. Duke Leopold Friedrich (he ruled from 1817 to 1871) made the Catholic community a parish and gave it land for the construction of the church and the rectory. In these years the rectory was finally built. Johannes Schulte founded the station of the Gray Sisters of St. Elisabeth .

The height of the tower is 38 meters (41 meters with the cross).

Under Heinrich Haehling von Lanzenauer (1904/1912) the St. Joseph Hospital, the Catholic school and the extension of the parish church by three vaults to the east were built.

After the neo-Gothic high altar had already been removed in 1930 , it was completely redesigned in the modern style between 1967 and 1968. The Stations of the Cross (1938) were designed by the Munich artist Georg Kemper. The design of the church windows in the main room comes from Christoph Grüger (Schönebeck / Elbe). The tabernacle with stele, altar cross, ambo, altar candlestick and Easter candlestick were created by the artist couple Dora and Hubert Kleemann between 1967 and 1970. The windows of the former baptistery on the tower were made by W. Gerhardt, Dessau (1952).

With the introduction of the Reformation in Anhalt, the Catholic communities disappeared. There are no reports of a Catholic life in the period thereafter, up to the beginning of the 18th century. The Propsteigemeinde Peter and Paul zu Dessau emerged from the Franciscan Mission founded in 1697 and received a permanent pastor in 1719. The service was held in the bedroom of the then Catholic castle captain Trinthammer at Castle Guard 1.

P. Gilbertus Berningk OFM, who wanted to build the first Catholic church in Dessau according to the plans of the Catholic Court Church in Dresden , failed at the end of the 18th century because of the financing. Since 1805 the chapel (St. Franziskus) and the pastor's apartment have been in the Amalienstiftung Poststrasse 5. Under Erasmus Tusch from Bohemia, the mission parish of Dessau was elevated to a parish by the ducal consistory on June 2, 1830.

The church was badly damaged in the bombing raid on Dessau on March 7, 1945. Reconstruction began in 1951 under Franz Carré and was completed in 1958. After the Second World War , expellees - u. a. from Silesia , the Sudetenland and Warmia - Catholic parish life is new. But some of them quickly moved further west.

Under Reinhold Heuel, the major renovation and major redesign of the interior of the church began in 1967, which was completed in the spring of 1968. The central window in the choir and the tabernacle are reminiscent of the burning bush .

On January 1, 1973, the Gray Sisters of St. Elisabeth the city of Dessau. The St. Joseph Hospital was continued by the Magdeburg Caritas Association . On February 26, 1974, the parish church was elevated to a provost church.

The new altar was on November 7, 1976 by the bishop and apostolic administrator in Magdeburg, John Brown , consecrated . It contains the relics of Saints Justus, Constantius, Tranquilla and, as a gift from the Archbishop of Paderborn, relics of Saint Liborius . In 1994 the Catholic hospital was taken over by the Congregation of the Alexians , including the former Robert Koch Hospital in Dessau-Alten .

Extensive renovation and renovation work on the church was carried out from 1995 to 1999 under Provost Max Pritze, who retired in 2001 after 25 years in Dessau. In 2005, the work on the rectory, vicarage and the old school under Provost Gerhard Nachtwei could be tackled with financial support from the Bonifatiuswerk . The conversion to the community center went hand in hand with a redesign of the entire courtyard.

Catholic Christians make up about 3.1% of the population living in Dessau. 11.4% of Dessau residents are Protestants. Today the parish has 2000 members and is the largest in the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul Dessau, which was established in November 2010.

Bells

When the church was built, three bells were consecrated and installed. During both world wars, the two larger bells were requisitioned. During the air raid on Dessau on March 7, 1945, the church burned down and the last bell also melted in the firestorm. The reconstruction took place in the years 1951 to 1958. In June 1956 four new bells were consecrated. In 1967 an installation of four electric chimes was carried out in the bell tower.
