Protein Z is a vitamin K -dependent glycoprotein in the blood plasma , which is formed in the liver and is involved in blood clotting .

Protein Z has a molar mass of 62 kDa and consists of 360 amino acids . It was detected in cattle in 1977 and in humans in 1984. Protein Z is involved in coagulation by supporting the accumulation of thrombin on endothelial phospholipid surfaces and by using a specific protease inhibitor to inhibit the procoagulant activity of factor Xa . Protein Z itself has no catalytic function.

A decreased level of protein Z has been linked to thrombosis and miscarriage .
