Proterogyrinus is a genus of Embolomeri from the Mississippium of North America and Scotland . He was probably carnivorous , that is, fed on meat, and lived in the carboniferous swamps that were dominant at the time. From proterogyrinus two are types known: P. scheeleri , the type species , and P. pancheni . Proterogyrinus was described by Alfred Romer in 1970.
features
The length of Proterogyrinus is estimated to be about 1 m. The skull was elongated; the roof of the skull is set off from the cheek area . A line of weakness runs between the roof of the skull and the cheek, which probably made it possible to bend the skull when biting, as it was probably also in the osteolepiform fish . The neck of proterogyrinus was short. The eddies were great. The tail was flattened, indicating that Proterogyrinus was a good swimmer. In contrast to later embolomeri such as pteroplax, the limbs were well developed, which speaks for rapid locomotion on land.
Systematics
According to Romer, Proterogyrinus belongs to the Proterogyrinidae . Within the Proterogyrinidae is proterogyrinus the Schwestertaxon the genus Papposaurus . The Proterogyrinidae in turn belongs to the group of Embolomeri . It is often wrongly interpreted as Temnospondyli , but the Embolomeri are more closely related to the Amniotes than to the Lissamphibien , as is the case with the Temnospondyli.
