Protonuraghe Maiori

Nuraghe Majori

The Protonuraghe Maiori (also called Majori ) is located in a cork oak grove , about 2 km north of Tempio Pausania in Gallura in the province of Sassari in Sardinia . Protonuraghen (also corridor or pseudonuraghen, Italian Nuraghe a corridoio ) are the pre- or early form of the classical tower structures or Tholosnuraghen ( Italian Nuraghe a tholos ) of the Bronze Age nuragic cultures of Sardinia.

As the name suggests (maiori is "large"), the Protonuraghe is built on a larger area and for larger stones than the also Bronze Age Tholos - nuraghi . The nuraghe, built on a natural rock formation on the side of a hill, with two smaller tholoi and the base of a third, has a walled courtyard and a staircase to the upper platform, which has not been preserved. It is a mixed construction of elements of the corridor or protonuraghen and those of the later tholosnuraghen. It's a massive tower made from huge blocks of granite. A corridor with a cantilever vault leads from the entrancethrough the nuraghe. Two corridors with small chambers with cantilever vaults (the tholoi) branch off from this corridor. The corridor ends in a particularly large inner courtyard, from where steps lead to the upper level.

Time position

The approximately 300 Protonuraghi on Sardinia were formed during phase B of the two-phase Bonnanaro culture , which was the successor to the both megalithic and Copper Age Monte Claro culture between 1800 and 1500 BC. Ruled.

Nearby are the remains of the Protonuraghe Naracheddu and the Nuraghe Cacchioni.
