Proviande

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Proviande is the branch organization of the Swiss meat industry in the legal form of a cooperative. The members of Proviande are national organizations along the entire meat value chain. Proviande brings together producers, livestock traders, processors of slaughtered cattle, meat and slaughter by-products as well as retailers, importers and exporters under one roof. As a registered trademark, “Swiss Meat” is a Proviande product.

tasks

The tasks of Proviande include, among other things, the neutral quality classification of carcasses in the slaughterhouses and of live animals in the slaughtered cattle markets as well as the organization and implementation of such public markets. The marketing communication “Swiss meat”, the creation and publication of meat statistics and the DNA origin check for members of the branch are also tasks of Proviande.

Proviande also implements the provisions of the SUISSE GARANTIE brand of origin in the meat industry regulations.

According to their statutes

  • Proviande promotes a high quality and competitive meat industry in Switzerland,
  • Proviande ensures the representative representation of the organizations and institutions of the Swiss meat industry,
  • As a national competence center for slaughter cattle and meat, Proviande promotes cooperation among market partners and represents industry concerns externally,
  • Proviande fulfills federal performance mandates,
  • Proviande is responsible for the marketing communication of Swiss meat at home and abroad under the “Swiss meat” brand,
  • Proviande provides services for its members and performs other tasks in the interests of the industry.

It is the central point of contact for concerns and questions about meat as a foodstuff, the domestic slaughter cattle and meat market and questions about the promotion of Swiss meat specialties at home and abroad.

Federal performance mandate

Proviande fulfills a federal performance mandate for enforcement tasks, takes on various projects in the service of the industry, promotes the positive image of Swiss meat and is committed to optimal framework conditions for the benefit of a successful meat industry.

Proviande operates along the entire meat value chain in three business areas:

  • The Classification & Markets division fulfills, among other things, a service mandate from the federal government on the slaughter cattle markets and in the slaughterhouses.
  • The “Swiss Meat” marketing communication division promotes the image of local meat products.
  • The Services division analyzes the meat market, conducts the DNA origin check and performs other services for the industry.

Classification & Markets

The Classification & Markets division carries out the neutral quality classification of live animals and carcasses on behalf of the federal government, monitors the public slaughter cattle markets, controls the determination of the slaughter weight, works with internal and external projects and leads training and further education courses. It is accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service SAS and all employees who assess the quality neutrally and monitor compliance with the slaughter weight ordinance are licensed.

Quality classification

Proviande uses the visual CH-TAX estimation method to assess the quality of the animals listed at the public cattle and sheep markets before the auction. In the larger slaughterhouses it uses the same system to assess the carcasses of the beef, sheep, horse and goat species and - in most cases electronically - the lean meat content of the carcasses of pigs.

Price reporting

Proviande carries out price reports for the QM weekly price tables every week. For this purpose, current prices are requested from producer organizations, from the slaughterhouse trade and from slaughterhouses and processing plants and weighted with a factor. These prices are binding on the public markets and also serve as a guide value for the entire industry.

Compliance with cannibalization regulations

The slaughter weights of animals of the cattle, pig, horse, sheep and goat species must be determined in accordance with the Slaughter Weight Ordinance (SVG). Proviande also fulfills this task as part of the service contract and monitors compliance with the cannibalization regulations.

Marketing communication "Swiss meat"

In the interests of all members (producers, processors, retailers), the “Swiss Meat” marketing communication division promotes trust in local meat production from the stable to the plate and thus the sale of Swiss meat. The communication measures within the framework of the federal sales promotion for agricultural products create a high level of appreciation, differentiate domestic meat from foreign meat, explain the higher price of Swiss meat and convey a piece of Swiss culture.

Services

With the DNA origin check for Swiss beef and veal, Proviande uses reference samples from the slaughterhouses to check the origin of the meat in the retail trade. This means that it can be proven at any time that meat and meat products with a Swiss declaration of origin actually come from animals that were kept and slaughtered in Switzerland.

organization

The highest body of Proviande is the general assembly. Each cooperative member has one vote.

The board of directors is composed of six representatives from each of the producers' organizations, the intermediaries and exploiters and their deputies. Consumers and restaurants are also represented without voting rights. The board of directors is headed by a neutral president.

The management under the leadership of the director Heinrich Bucher takes on the overall management. She is responsible for the operational management of the cooperative in accordance with the guidelines and instructions of the Board of Directors.

The office is divided into four business areas and a staff unit and employs almost 100 people in the office and in the field.
