geography
The Providence Atoll extends north-south for more than 30 km and is up to 10 km wide in east-west direction. The land area of the atoll alone is 1.5 km², while the area including the lagoon is around 200 km². There are no natural fresh water sources. In addition to some sandbanks, the atoll has two islands that rise only a few meters above the sea surface:
- Providence Island in the far north of the atoll (at 9 ° 13 ′ 25 ″ S , 51 ° 1 ′ 53 ″ E ) is 4 km long and up to 400 m wide, with an area of a good one square kilometer. In the south of the island there is a small settlement with only six residents.
- Cerf Island in the extreme south of the atoll at 9 ° 31 ′ 19 ″ S , 50 ° 59 ′ 2 ″ E is also about 4 km long and up to 500 m wide, but only reaches a width of 50 meters at the narrowest point. The area is half a square kilometer. The island is uninhabited.
About 30 km west of Providence Island is Saint-Pierre Island, which is also part of the Farquhar Group .
