Vegetative characteristics

Prunus maximowiczii is a small tree that reaches heights of up to 7 meters. Its branches are spread. The bark is dark gray. The bark of the twigs is initially tinted brown and densely shaggy with hair, later grayish-brown. The winter buds are long ovate and hairy when pressed down.

The alternate leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The densely shaggy hairy petiole has a length of 5 to 15 millimeters. With a length of 3 to 9 cm and a width of 1.5 to 4 cm, the simple leaf blade is obovate to obovate-elliptical and suddenly pointed. The leaf margin is roughly double serrated. There are six to nine lateral nerves on each side of the main nerve, along which there is often pressed hair on the upper side of the leaf. Otherwise the leaf blade is glabrous. The two linear stipules with dark purple glands on the edges fall off shortly after the flowering period.

Generative characteristics

The spatulate to elongated bud scales are 10 to 15 millimeters long, 5 to 6 millimeters wide, have tiny, dark red glands on the edge and fall off shortly after the flowering period. In an upright, umbrella- shaped inflorescence with a hairy inflorescence axis, five to ten flowers stand together. The foliage-like, green, with 5 to 7 × 5 to 4 cm egg-shaped bracts have a pointed-sawn edge. The tightly pressed, shaggy hairy flower stalk is 5 to 15 millimeters long.

The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry , five-fold flowers have a diameter of about 1.5 cm and open at the same time as the leaves unfold. The fluffy hairy flower cup (hypanthium), pressed on the outside, is inverted-cone-shaped, 3 to 4 millimeters long and 2.5 to 3 millimeters wide. The five elliptical-triangular sepals are more or less as long as the flower cup and have a sawn edge. The five white petals are elliptical with 6 to 7 × 5 to 6 millimeters. There are about 36 stamens . The style, which is almost as long as the stamens, ends in a cephalic scar.

The stone fruit, which is black when ripe, is bitter and ovoid at 7 to 8 × 5 to 6 millimeters. The endocarp or the stone core is shaped like a pit. The fruits ripen in September.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

Prunus maximowiczii occurs in eastern Manchuria , Japan, Korea and Sakhalin .

Prunus maximowiczii was first described in 1856 by Franz Joseph Ruprecht in Bulletin de la Classe Physico-Mathématique de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg , 15, p. 131. Synonyms are Padellus maximowiczii (Ruprecht) Eremin & Yushev , Padus maximowiczii (Ruprecht) Sokolov , Cerasus maximowiczii (Ruprecht) Komarov .
