Franz Josef Ruprecht (* 1. November 1814 in Freiburg , Grand Duchy of Baden , † July 23 jul. / 4. August  1870 greg. In St. Petersburg , also Franz Josef written Russian Франц Иванович Рупрехт / Franz Ivanovich Ruprecht ) was a k. k. Austrian botanist in Russian service. Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Rupr. "

Life

Ruprecht attended grammar school in Prague , where he graduated in 1830 at the age of 16. He then went on to study at the Medical Faculty of the University of Prague , which he finished in 1836. In 1839 he became an employee of the Botanical Museum of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Ruprecht's research trips included the north of the European part of Russia in 1841 and the Caucasus from 1860 to 1862.

Ruprecht became deputy director of the imperial botanical garden in Saint Petersburg in 1851 . In 1853 he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and in 1855 head of the Botanical Museum.

As a connoisseur of the Russian flora , he published a large number of specialist works. The main focus was on the systematics of grasses and aquatic plants.

Honors

Carl Anton von Meyer named the genus Ruprechtia from the knotweed family (Polygonaceae) after him . In 1841 he received the Demidow Prize .
