Psammitis ninnii ( synonym : Xysticus ninnii ) is a species of spider from the family of crab spiders (Thomisidae). The species isvery rarein Central Europe and endangered in Germany.

features

The species is one of the medium-sized crab spiders. Males have a body length of 4.2 to 5.0 mm, females reach 5.5 to 7.5 mm. Like many species of the genus, Psammitis ninnii is variable in color, but apparently shows only a slight sexual dimorphism in terms of color and pattern. The front part of the body ( prosoma ) is blackish-brown on the sides and clearly light-edged. In the middle there is a wide, whitish cream-colored longitudinal band, which shows a brownish to beige spot that is broad at the front and tapering towards the back, i.e. approximately V-shaped. The pointed spot ends in this species clearly in front of the back of the body.

The rear body ( Opisthosoma ) shows like many species of the genus on a light beige or whitish background a dark leaf markings. This is beige-brown, with dark edges, only slightly indented on the inside and separated into two longitudinal bands by the light basic color. The legs show the same basic color over their entire length as the pointed spot on the prosoma and are only slightly darkly spotted.

Males are similar to females, but are significantly darker overall. As with many species of the genus, the femora and approximately the proximal half of the tibia of the two front pairs of legs are black-brown, the lower part of the front legs and the rear pairs of legs are brown.

In Central Europe there are a number of very similar species of the genus; the reliable determination of the species is therefore only possible through a macroscopic examination of the genital organs (genital morphological).

distribution and habitat

Psammitis ninnii inhabits the Palearctic . The species is more common in Europe in the east and south and is absent in Scandinavia and Great Britain .

The species loves warmth and lives exclusively on dry sandy grasslands , steppes and heaths up to a maximum of 1800 m. She stays there on the low vegetation.

Danger

The species is very rarely found in Germany and is apparently largely restricted to the climatically particularly favorable areas in the southwest and east. In Germany, it is classified in the Red List as "highly endangered" (Category 2) due to its rarity and its close connection to heat-exposed, sparsely vegetated open areas.
