Publius Carisius was a Roman senator and general of the Augustan period who lived in the 1920s BC. Fought the tribe of Asturians in northern Spain .

Life

Publius Carisius came from the gens Carisia . The ancient historian Cassius Dio wrongly stated his prenomen as Titus , as can be seen from some preserved coins of Carisius.

Under Augustus Carisius functioned from about 27 to 22 BC. BC as legatus Augusti pro praetore Lusitania . The emperor led since 26 BC Personally the Cantabrian War (29–19 BC) against the Cantabrian and Asturian tribes that were not yet conquered . The region in which the armed conflict took place is located south of the Cantabrian Mountains ( Spanish Cordillera Cantábrica or Sistema Cantábrico ) a mountain range in northern Spain , which is a western extension of the Pyreneesrepresents. According to Roman sources, the reason for the Roman interventions is the constant raids by the Cantabrians on neighboring Roman regions and their attempt to expand their domain. Early 25 BC The Asturians launched a surprise attack on three Roman winter camps set up near the Astura River . They descended from their snow-capped mountains, moved to this river and wanted to attack the Roman bases with their troops in three columns. But the Brigäkiner , who settled the area of Benavente ( province of Zamora ), betrayed Carisius the danger threatening the legions.

Due to this timely warning, Carisius managed to attack the Asturians before they attacked the Roman camps and beat them after a bloody battle. The defeated Asturians withdrew to their well-fortified city of Lancia , which was near what is now Mansilla de las Mulas and about 20 km from León . After taking Lancia, Carisius made sure that his legionnaires did not set the city on fire. He then seized other Asturian cities.

The year 25 BC Carisius decided to settle the soldiers to be released from the Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina in the veterans' colony Emerita Augusta (now Mérida ) founded by Augustus . The fortifications of the new colony can be seen on some coins of Carisius.

Allegedly due to the harshness and presumption of Carisius, it came 22 BC. To a rebellion of the Asturians. The governor of the province of Hispania citerior , Gaius Furnius , who was confronted at the same time with an uprising by the Cantabrians , supported Carisius with his army after the suppression of the Cantabrian revolt; united, the two Roman generals were able to defeat the Asturians and force them to submit again.

Nothing is reported in the surviving sources about the further fate of Carisius.
