Publius Cornelius Cethegus (Senator)

Publius Cornelius Cethegus († before 66 BC) was a Roman senator in the first half of the 1st century BC. From the branch of Cethegi of the patrician gens of Cornelii .

It is not known whether Cethegus held a higher office of the cursus honorum . He must at least have been quaestor, since he was a member of the Senate. Perhaps his career began before the alliance war . Cethegus was in the Civil War initially a supporter of Marius , joined after the Battle of Praeneste but Sulla and was able to save his life.

He was in the Senate in the 1970s. BC known as the "king of the backbenchers" because he bribed a large number of these senators, known as pedarii , who had the right to vote but not to speak. Thanks to his wealth, he was able to influence important political decisions. For example, it is documented that he helped Lucius Licinius Lucullus , the lover of Cethegus, a prostitute known throughout the city, to gain command of the Third Mithridatic War .

One of his two sons, Gaius Cornelius Cethegus , was born in 63 BC. Executed as a participant in the Catilinarian Conspiracy .
