Puccinia cagayanensis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sweet grass Phragmites vulgaris . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is endemic to Luzons , the largest island in the Philippines .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia cagayanensis can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia cagayanensis grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Aecia or spermogonia of the species are not known. The cinnamon-brown uredia of the fungus grow on both sides of the host leaves and on the cladding tubes. Their yellow to golden yellow uredospores are 19–24 × 15–18  µm in size, almost spherical to ellipsoidal and finely spiky. The parts of the species are unknown. The brown teliospores are two-celled, usually elongated to almost club-shaped and 28–38 × 14–18 µm in size; superficially they are smooth to dotted. Their stalk is brownish and up to 35 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia cagayanensis only includes the Philippine Cagaya .

ecology

The host plant of Puccinia cagayanensis is Phragmites vulgaris . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle of which only uredia and their host are known so far; Telia, spermogonia and aecia could not be assigned to the fungus.
